Set against the breathtaking natural backdrop of Nanshan Scenic Area in Urumqi, Xinjiang, the large-scale outdoor mythological musical The Covenant of Kunlun made a stunning debut. Centered on the themes of national unity and ethnic solidarity, the production vividly portrays the enduring historical ties between China’s heartland and its frontier regions through an epic narrative.

Spanning 20,000 square meters of open-air stage and featuring over 500 performers, the show unfolds across five acts: The Covenant of Kunlun, Dream as Steed, Promise as Chariot, Heart as Wheel, and Harmony of Heaven and Earth. It tells the legendary journey of King Mu of Zhou as he fulfills an ancient pact made between the Yellow Emperor and the Queen Mother of the West—braving blizzards, fire seas, and mythical tribes in pursuit of the sacred “harmony of gold and jade.”

To deliver precise, reliable, and artistically expressive lighting under demanding outdoor conditions, the production deployed two flagship fixtures from XMLITE (formerly Xiangming Lighting):
- 80 units of 1400W high-output moving head profile
- 54 units of 1400W moving head beam light
The 1400W moving head profile played a pivotal role in shaping the mythic atmosphere. Equipped with the OSRAM Lok-it 1400-PS_Brilliant lamp—a high-efficiency, eco-friendly alternative to traditional short-arc sources—it delivers exceptional color rendering (CRI >90) for lifelike skin tones and set accuracy. Its four-blade shutter system enables millimeter-precision beam shaping, while rapid, accurate pan/tilt positioning allows designers to isolate divine temples, storm paths, or ritual altars across vast terrain—ensuring every dramatic climax is visually anchored.
“The XMLITE 1400W profiles performed flawlessly despite low temperatures, strong winds, and long-throw requirements,” noted the lead lighting technician. “Sharp cuts, pure colors, stable output—zero failures throughout the run. They met both the artistic and technical demands of large-scale outdoor theatre.”

This landmark production not only reimagines Chinese mythology for modern audiences but also establishes the high-output moving head profile as a benchmark solution for mega-scale outdoor cultural tourism performances. With XMLITE’s professional lighting technology, the ancient “harmony of gold and jade” resonates once more beneath the Kunlun Mountains—proving that Chinese-made intelligent fixtures can excel even in the world’s most challenging environments.
